Obituary of Fern Doreen Bang

Fern Bang passed away peacefully in the late evening on July 2nd, 2022 at the Cypress House in Swift Current. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and devoted wife of 57 years to Larry Bang. Fern was born October 6th of 1944 and was predeceased by her parents Gladys and Alfred Ekdahl. She leaves behind her loving husband, Larry Bang, and her wonderful siblings Donna Chymycz , Alice Garvik and Carl Ekdahl. Fern is also leaving behind her bereaved three children Kevin, Melinda and Sheldon and her seven grandchildren Tyler,Tristan, Lara, Nolan, Colton, Casey and Kayden - all of whom she adored. Fern spent most of her childhood years outside Hodgeville on a farm where she participated in the 4-H Beef Club and especially enjoyed being a part of high school operettas and taking voice trainings in Swift Current. Upon graduation from high school in 1962, Fern spread her wings and became a resident of Regina attending Teachers’ College and then to university in Saskatoon receiving her Standard A Teaching Certificate. Soon after, Fern began teaching in Hazlet where she met Larry, her husband-to-be, at a Bang picnic. They were married on November 6, 1965 and moved to the farm where they raised their family and still have a home there today. In 1966, Fern joined the Sandford Dene Ladies Club. Shortly thereafter, Fern and Larry started a family: Kevin was born in 1967, Melinda in 1969, and lastly, Sheldon in 1975. Over the years, Fern proved herself to be an efficient and effective multitasker! Not only was she a mother and wife extraordinaire, but so much more! She also managed to be a yard landscaper and support farmer - moving equipment, driving the big truck at harvest, water hauling, just to name a few of her additional tasks and skills. However, even with all that, she still enjoyed and playing a part in the community in any capacity that was needed. As the kids began graduating and moving off to college or pursuing their careers, Fern was finally able to release the travel bug that she had held inside for so long. She took bus tours through many parts of Canada and the United States. Occasionally, she was even able to convince her husband,Larry, to join on some of her adventures - including Alaskan and a Hawaiian Cruises. Fern also travelled to Norway twice: once in the 90’s that offered the once in a lifetime opportunity to cross over the Arctic Circle via ship. More recently, she travelled back with her siblings to locate the Ekdahl family homestead, among other pursuits. It was a very satisfying trip that her siblings will continue to cherish for years to come. Fern and Larry also made numerous winter trips to visit and stay with Kevin and family in Texas. Mom enjoyed her family more than anything and attempted to spend as much time as she could with all of them! Also during this time, Fern really enjoyed being a member of “The Red Hat Club” which offered fun and comeraderie for women over 50 - in their prime! She also continued to pursue her other passion - music! She was involved in multiple choirs over the years that performed at a variety of events. She also had a strong voice and the confidence to sing solos which she enjoyed very much. It really is hard to capture all the things our mother loved and enjoyed but one thing is for sure; she loved her family, friends and community. Rest In Peace, Mom. Your life was blessed and you were a blessing to all of us.

The Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Fern Bang will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Church, Swift Current, SK.
