Obituary of Harold Satter

SATTER - Harold - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Harold (Bud) Satter on November 16, 2021, at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife, Jean; his four children Hal, Rod (Laurel), Donna and Karen (Scott); five grandchildren, Pam, Michelle, Steven, Aslinn and Jimmi-Lynn; seven great grandchildren Riley, Talen, Tevryn, Alex, Theo, Mitchell and Jayden. He is predeceased by his siblings Norman, Orbin, Eleanor, Lillian, Hazel and Thelma.

Bud was born to Olga & Harold Satter in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Through his positive attitude and pleasant personality, he quickly earned his life-long nickname, Bud, and after completing his schooling, he married Jean, the love of his life. Bud worked for the City of Swift Current for many years, initially maintaining and improving Elmwood Park in the summer and ensuring the Southside rink was taken care of in the winter. He spent many hours flooding the rink and helping the kids with their skates while stoking up the old wood stove in the shack to keep everyone warm. He kept the park and rink in tip top shape. 

As a result of his hard work on the job, and his graduation from the University of Guelph Horticultural Program, Bud was promoted to Parks Superintendent in charge of managing the teams that maintained all the City parks, playgrounds, cemeteries and skating rinks. He was known as a very fair manager with a great sense of humour, and he will be fondly remembered by the hundreds of seasonal workers who reported to him over the years, until his retirement in 1988.

Bud was an avid wood worker in retirement and spent countless hours in his wood shop creating ball point pens from exotic hardwoods and turning bowls on his lathe. He had a passion for building anything with wood, such as Adirondack chairs, side tables, and even game boards. He had a natural ingenuity for making and fixing things. Tell him what you wanted, he could build it. Bud maintained his own backyard greenhouse for many years and demonstrated his talent for gardening and growing potatoes, peas and carrots, but flowering plants were his passion. He would start them in his green house in early spring and then transfer to all areas of his yard. He loved growing vegetables and flowers and entering them in the horticultural show, where he often won prizes (his favourite award being the Best in Show Dahlia, for which he won a beautiful crystal vase). 

Bud was admired by all who knew him. He was a loving father with a tender and kind personality. He loved dance and music, including playing the accordion and banjo. Both he and Jean were active in the church and Bud was a member of the Barbershop Quartet as well as the Square Dance Club. Bud and Jean square danced for many years before and after they retired.

We wish to thank the staff at Cypress House for the care and support they have given Dad over his final years, as well as the staff, nurses and doctors at Cypress Regional Hospital for their wisdom, care and sensitivity shown to Dad and our family until the end of his life. We also thank Pastor Travis Heide of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church for the spiritual support and comfort to our family in Dad’s final hours.

 

Arrangements for Dad are being handled by Parkside Memorial Funeral Home and a service will be held at a later date in 2022. We will provide further information at that time. In lieu of flowers, and for those wishing to make a donation in the honour of Harold Satter, the family suggests the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.  The interment will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK.
