GITZEL – Norman was born on June 24, 1935 in Stony Plain, AB to David and Elizabeth Gitzel, the second of six children. He grew up on a mixed farm where he had the chance to learn many farming skills. He loved the outdoors and did a lot of hunting, trapping, and fishing, particularly with his uncle Rudolph. The Gitzel kids attended Garden Valley School, which was about a two mile trip by foot, buggy or sleigh, depending on the season. After Norm completed grade eight he stayed at home to help with running the farm. During his early teen years Norm accepted Jesus as his personal savior and Lord. The family attended a small active church where Norm was exposed to good friends, missionaries, and Christian leaders that had an impact on his growing faith. After leaving home, Norm worked at a variety of jobs in northern Alberta, including trucking and heavy equipment operation. In 1963 Norm moved to Herbert and partnered with Bill Redekop in a John Deere dealership. Norm met and married Naomi Hiebert and they had two sons, Sheldon (1965) and Cameron (1968). Norm transitioned to farming and in 1968 the family moved to their farm north of Herbert where they remained until retiring into town. Norm enjoyed his retirement years camping, boating and fishing at the Herbert Ferry Park, and visiting with neighbors and friends. He rarely missed his daily visit at coffee row. Norm passed away unexpectedly on March 20, 2017. Norm is survived by his wife of 53 years Naomi; his children and families: Sheldon (Jeanette) Gitzel, Jordan, Kristin: Cameron (Rachelle) Gitzel, Rylee, Reece, Caleb, Matthias; his siblings Clarence (Maureen) Gitzel; Irene (Bob) Gardner, Stan (Joan) Gitzel, Dan (Norma) Gitzel, Carol (Brian) Lindskoog; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, David and Elizabeth Gitzel; parents-in-law Lloyd and Susie Hiebert; sister-in-law Elizabeth Hiebert; niece Debbie Parschauer; and nephew Nathan Gitzel. A funeral service was held on Friday, March 24, 2017 at Eastside Church of God with Reverend Bob Cappelle officiating. The interment took place at Herbert Cemetery, Herbert, SK.
