Obituary of Fulton Heron

HERON — Frederick Fulton died peacefully with his family by his side as the evening sun was setting on Friday, June 20, 2008 at the age of 90 years and 11 days. Fulton was born on the family homestead (NE 24 19 20) to Robert (Fred) and Lulia Heron on June 9, 1918. He attended school at Waldensian Valley School #743 and farmed with his father until joining the RCAF in 1941 and spending the next year and a half at a number of Training Stations in Canada before going overseas in 1943, where he was posted with #6 Bomber Group at Yorkshire, England. After serving 3 years, he returned to Canada and was discharged in 1946. He was a member of the Cabri Legion and received his 50 year pin in 2008. On February 28, 1946, he married Ruth Heard, an RN on the Heard homestead near Shackleton. They took up farming in 1946 and actively farmed until 1982 on the farm which belonged to his grandad. They moved to Cabri on Nov. 29, 1992. From 1982 to 2005 he helped his son’s Robert and Murray with seeding and harvesting. Fulton was a director on the Shackleton Rural Telephone Company and also a member of the Sask Wheat Pool Committee in Shackleton. He was also on the group committee for cubs and scouts. Fulton was also actively involved with Cabri Museum Board for many years. Fulton and Ruth were involved together with Archaeology and were often seen hunting arrowheads at the river and were influential in helping to form the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society. They were instrumental in discovering the archaelogy site to be named the “Heron Eden Site” south of Prelate. In recognition of 45 years of membership with The Saskatchewan Archaeological Society, Fulton & Ruth received membership pins and certificate in May 2008. Fulton is survived by his wife Ruth of 62 years and by his five children, son Robert (Marlis) of Cabri, granddaughter Andrea (Brendon) Mix, great grandchildren Sydney and Barrett of Olds, Alberta, grandson Erik of Cabri; son Ron of Shackleton; daughter Glynda (Ewen) Newton, grandsons Matthew and Michael of Ottawa; daughter Jan (Bob) Anweiler of Saskatoon, grandson Chris (Chelsea), children Cassidy and Tanner of Dalmeny, granddaughter Kerilyn of Saskatoon; son Murray (Teresa), granddaughter Denille of Saskatoon and granddaughter Dayna of Cabri. He is also survived by his brothers Clayton (Isabelle), Glenn (Lorraine), Daryl (Carole) and sisters Eloise Miller, Ruby Wengel, Muriel (Bud) Allen, Edith Thomas and brother-in-law Chris Hesketh and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant brother Edwin and parents Fred and Lulia, his sister Freida Hesketh and brothers-in-law Max Miller, Ernest Wengel and George Thomas. At his request a private graveside service for immediate family was held on Wednesday, June 25 at the Shackleton cemetery with Rev. Maxine Pirie presiding. The Cabri/Abbey Royal Canadian Legion formed an honour guard. Bert Culham played “Last Post”. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cabri Royal Canadian Legion, Cabri United Church or the Cabri Hospital Auxiliary.
