Obituary of Helen Derksen

DERKSEN – Helen was born to Peter and Mary Sommerfeld on April 28, 1923 and she died suddenly on July 29, 2008. Helen’s greatest joy was her family, and it is with great love and pride that they remember her.
Helen was born in Wymark, Saskatchewan, and taught school in the area for many years. She always remembered her years of teaching, and each of her students, with pride and joy. Helen was very active in the Wymark Ladies Mission Club and Women in Mission at Zion Mennonite Church. She served as treasurer for Zion, but it is as treasurer for Camp Elim that many knew her, and she served in that position for many decades. She enjoyed interacting with all the people that entered her life, and she was happy to welcome all of them into her home and her heart. Helen spent much of her time lovingly caring for her husband, her large family, her garden and doing crochet and cross stitch. Helen is predeceased by her daughter Lynne Derksen. She is survived by her husband of 60 years Henry D. Derksen and her children Grace (Ike) Funk, Shirley (Jakob) Wiebe, Reg (Teresa) Derksen, Sandy (Jay) Biem, Joan (George) Miklovic and Lorna (Ryan) Epp; her grandchildren, Katharine (Scott) Albrecht, Marlis Funk, Conrad (Gillian) Funk, Reg (Allison) Wiebe, Stephan (Kalyn) Wiebe, Theo Wiebe, Flora Wiebe, Jason Biem, Jorie Biem, Jonathan Miklovic, Emily Miklovic, and Alexandra Epp; and her great granddaughter Anna Albrecht. The funeral remembering Helen was held at Zion Mennonite Church on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at 10:00am. with Pastors Helen and Bill Kruger. The organist was Olga Heinrichs and the ushers were Bill Reimche and Vic Reimer. The pallbearers were Conrad Funk, Reg Wiebe, Stephan Wiebe, Theo Wiebe, Jason Biem, Jonathan Miklovic, Ryan Epp and Scott Albrecht. The interment took place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Camp Elim, c/o Zion Mennonite Church. For further information or to sign the family book of condolence, visit our website at parksidefuneralhome.com.
