Obituary of Lydia Wiebe

WIEBE – Mrs. Lydia (Dueck) Wiebe passed away peacefully on May 17, 2018 at the Western Senior Citizen’s Home in Leader, Saskatchewan at the age of 73 years. She was born on April 9, 1945 in Gouldtown, Saskatchewan. She accepted Christ as her Saviour and became a child of God at a young age. She took her elementary education at Roland School near Gouldtown, after which she worked at home on the farm for a few years. She had fond memories of singing together and taking walks with her mother at home. She followed the Lord in baptism when she was a teenager, became a member of the church in Gouldtown and then took two years of Bible school in Swift Current. Following this, she took a sewing course in Swift Current. Early on in life, she discovered that she loved working with children and served a number of families by providing childcare and housekeeping support. The last family she served was Herb and Adeline Wiebe. While there, Herb’s brother, Otto was also working on the family farm. A subtle wink from Otto across the kitchen quickly blossomed into love and a proposal to marry. He became the love of her life. They married on April 1, 1967 after postponing it one day due to a snowstorm. They lived in Herbert during their first year together, after which they moved to a farm they purchased a few miles from where Otto grew up. They raised three boys on the farm. Lydia was involved in the Herbert MB church; teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir and a trio with her sister in laws, was a Pal to a number of girls in Pioneer Girls, and worked in the library. She threw great birthday parties, cheered enthusiastically at the boys’ sports events and attended the theatre plays they were in. Health struggles started for Lydia in 1975, but that didn’t stop her from enjoying life. Lydia loved going camping and on other trips with the family. She enjoyed playing games with family and friends. She was a voracious reader and read thousands of books throughout her life. Her other hobbies included a season doing Macrome, she dabbled in pottery, played the autoharp and talked many hours on the phone. Otto and Lydia moved to Herbert from the farm in 2001. Since that time, she spent time making meals for people who were ill and mothers who just had babies, spent many winter evenings playing games with Otto and loved to connect with her children and grandchildren. For the 51 years they were married, Lydia cherished having devotions together with Otto every morning and evening. Lydia is survived by her loving husband Otto Wiebe and son’s Steve (Connie), Cliff (Heather), Bruce (Melanie). Her 5 grandsons (Ryan, Nathaniel, Samuel, Daniel, Andrew) who she fed copious amounts of baking too and loved with all her heart. She is predeceased by her parents, John and Helen Dueck and infant child Harvey.She is also survived by her siblings, Menno (Christie), Reuben, Laura (Herb) Guenther, Florence (Terry) Kinney, Walter, Nancy (Dan) Martens, Roy (Caron), Valarie (Michael) Wedman. From Lydia’s in-law family, she is predeceased by John and Agnes Wiebe (Parents In-Law) John and Agatha Wiebe, Anne Wiebe, Herbert and Adeline Wiebe, Abe Friesen, Jake and Iona Wiebe. she is survived by Salma Friesen, Peter and Nettie Wiebe, Peter and Hildy Dyck, Walter and Clara Wiebe. She is also survived by some uncles and aunts and many cousins, nephews and nieces. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile and positive attitude. Her faith in God stayed strong until she went into the presence of the Lord. Donations can be made in Lydia’s memory to Westbank Bible Camp.
