Dyck – Muriel Irene (Laird), passed away at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current on June 6th, 2009. She was born on the family farm in the Cedar Hill District, south of Swift Current on June 27th, 1936. She is survived by a loving family: husband F. Ben (married Oct. 10th, 1964) of Swift Current, sons Milton of Swift Current, Mark (wife Maritza and sons Andrew and Samuel) of Charles Town, West Virginia, Miles of Edmonton AB and daughter Jennifer (husband Brian Reimer and sons Joel and Rowan) of Swift Current; brothers Roy (Marian) of Duncan BC and Donald (Gloria) of Shaunavon; sisters Doris (Bob) MacKenzie of Nanaimo BC, Mabel (Walter) Wall of Saskatoon, and Joan (Gilbert) Hagstrom of Shaunavon; sister-in-law Hazel Laird numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Charles (1961), mother Florence (1971); brother William (Hazel); sisters and brothers in law Pauline (Bert) Cassidy, Hilda (Richard) Knipshield, Norma (Allan) Heid, Ellen (Reinhart) Relke, Marion (Palmer) Ringdal; infant sisters Joyce and Ida and brothers-in-law Jack (Joan) Wall and Gilbert (Joan) Hagstrom. Muriel obtained a Saskatchewan Standard Teaching Certificate through Normal School and further studies at the University of Saskatchewan. She also graduated from the Winnipeg Bible College with a Bachelor of Religious Education Degree. Muriel was a dedicated schoolteacher and taught in Beaver Valley (South of Cadillac), Happy Hollow (near Haywarden), Beechy, Swift Current (Central and Oman), Lakefield Ontario, and Beverley. She volunteered her teaching skills by mentoring young mothers in the Successful Mothers Program through social services, tutored adult students in reading and writing, taught ESL classes through the community college and church refugee programs. She was a dedicated member of Zion Mennonite Church, taught Sunday school for many, many years and served on the board of Deacons for the last 6 ½ years. She excelled in visiting and extending care to the older female members of the church. Muriel loved to garden, she raised and preserved much food for the family. She loved houseplants and nurtured a beautiful display of geraniums, African violets and tropical plants in our home. Her hobby was reading fiction, devotional and theological material and her Bible. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Funeral services were held on Wednesday June 10th, 2009 at Zion Mennonite Church with Rev. Herman Wiebe officiating. Tributes were given by Helen Kruger and Jennifer and Miles Dyck. The organist was Olga Heinrichs; the pianist was Marian Dueck. Peter Dyck, Victor Reimer and Bill Reimche served as ushers. The pallbearers were nephews Lawrence Cassidy, Lloyd Cassidy, Brent Hagstrom, Lesley Wall, Kevin Wall and Bruno Garrecht. A fellowship lunch in the church followed the interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. Parkside Memorial Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
