Obituary of Mark Burrell

BURRELL – Mark passed away on January 23, 2012 at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current. Mark was born on October 20, 1931 near Wallard, SK. He is survived by his wife Joyce and 4 sons; Dave (Tracy), Dean, Brian, John (Cindy); grandchildren, Chrystal Burrell, Amanda Vanbocquestal, Shayna Burrell, Brandon Burrell, Kielly Burrell and great-grandchild Dom. He was predeceased by his father Mark Burrell and mother Mary Jane (Galbraith) Burrell; brother Fred, sisters Jean Cheesman, Margaret Wilson and brother-in-law Jack Wilson. Mark went from living on the farm to the Swift Current Research Center and then into the army and over to Korea.
After spending 3 years in the army he went from Calgary to Regina to wait on his discharge from the army and there he contracted Polio. He spent about a year in Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg and then into a wheelchair that he spent 58 years in. He then went to Spiritwood, SK where he met Joyce and they were married in 1958. They had 4 sons and now have 5 grandchildren and on great-grandson. Mark worked at various things over the next few years; he was a bookkeeper at a garage, rototilled gardens with a riding garden tractor, was a part owner in an electrical motor shop, fixed vacuum cleaners, did woodworking as well as various other hobbies. Mark and Joyce moved to Swift Current from Lloydminster in 1978. Then on June 30, 2011 they moved to the Riverview Village Estates. A funeral service was held on Thursday, January 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the Royal Canadian Legion Hall in Swift Current with David Jury, Terry Johnson and Lynn Higgins officiating. The pianist was Arlene Dunnington and the ushers were Doug Dunnington and Lloyd Argue. The interment will take place at the Wallard Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Mark may be made to the Paraplegic Association, Diabetes Association or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
