DICKIE – Georgina Calder (Jean, Granny) – born May 15, 1920 in South Queensferry, Scotland passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 in Swift Current, SK. Scotland, South Queensferry, the bagpipes and the forth bridges were always in her heart and part of her life. She left her beloved country, family and friends after marrying her husband Adam Dickie in 1946 and came to a foreign barren land to start a new life and family. She always said that if she wouldn’t have been so sick coming across the ocean she would have gone straight back home. Sceptre, SK was her new home now. Granny was very active in the community, homemakers, Legion, Whist Club and 4H Club, while working at the hotel, cleaning private homes and caretaker of the school. In 1978 the family moved to Swift Current, SK and Granny worked at the Pioneer Lodge. She loved her job and new friends. She overcame many battles living in this new country all alone but she was a strong, stubborn, and independent woman – she made the best of everything she had and what life gave her. Granny worked hard all her life but she never complained. Her children, Ron (Pat), Brian (Donna), Gary, Linda (Gord) and Patricia were her world. Both she and dad devoted their lives by giving their time and energy to their kids and 8 grandchildren; Kristi (Jason), Karen (Mike), Jenita, Matthew, Janine (Cory), Tyler (Amanda), Chris (Kelsey) and Scott (Sharon) as well as her 8 great-grandchildren; Hannah, Makenna, Cooper, Chloe, Josh, Kiera, Peyton and Evan. She will also be missed by her nieces and nephews both in Canada and Scotland. For “Granny” it was always a joyous time when her whole family was around her – it was what she loved the most. She also loved to have dinners at her place and play card games. Granny had many great friends and to her they were all part of her family, she always welcomed everyone into her house and treated them like family. She loved to knit so over the years we all have enjoyed her handiwork. She loved to read, eat ginger chocolates, ice cream and all those chocolate bars that she said were bought in case someone came to visit. The family would like to say a special thank you to Betty Bettes, Sylvia Carpenter, Rose Hammel and Lynn Meyers for being such good friends to Granny. Thank you to the 2nd floor unit 4 nurses and staff that so lovingly cared for Granny and her family. Granny is predeceased by her husband, Adam in 2007 and daughter, Linda in 2008 and granddaughter Jolene in 1977. Granny was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed by all. “We love you Granny”. A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the chapel of Parkside Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Rob Cochrane officiating. The interment took place at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
