I sat down to reflect today; and many times I suppose, I did this quite often after being with George for the most part; and luckily, with Pearl too. An understanding of trust and a feeling of certainty always seemed to pervade my thoughts as I searched my fond memories of the work and just plain friendship opportunities we shared, as far back as 1978.
That’s a long time to know someone who, for all intents and purposes was your: boss, colleague, mentor, travel companion, leader; and, confidant. Most instances I found myself being a ‘shadow catcher’ as I followed George’s broadcasted shadow, either physically right behind him; or figuratively, as I talked to him on the telephone about educational business, China, project plans, and strategies; or just sitting quietly, simply remembering his positive impact on others, and of course on me.
Needless to say, both Gloria and I were honored to know him and to visit him a few short days before his passing. Needless to say also, we are honored to know Pearl, whose resolve is matched by no one and her help and guidance continues to be cherished.
In my heart and mind, George will always continue to be part of me, in thought and spirit. He will continue to help me make decisions, knowing full well that he knew there were always solutions to what one encountered. And that is a blessing.
