Obituary of Glenn Martinson

MARTINSON – Glenn – Died April 6/2016 at the age of 79, in his home with family by his side after a short battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his father Carl Martinson in 1990 and mother Violet Martinson in 1998; a son Darcy Martinson in 1986; a Stepson Norman (PeeWee) Thaxter in 1992; his sister Carol Dalzell in 1994 and a brother Darryl Martinson in 2011. Survived by a daughter Tracy (Derryl) Wiebe, a son Carley Martinson, and their mother Ruby Martinson all of Swift Current; a brother Gary (Carol Anne) Martinson of Calgary; His partner and care- giver Kathy Thaxter of Swift Current and her family; Larry (Shelly) Thaxter of Abu Dhabi; Keith Thaxter of Whitehorse; Shawn (Sherry) Thaxter and Dane Thaxter both of Calgary. Nine Grandchildren: Taylor and Riley Wiebe; Sasha, Zach, Brittany, Taylor, Jordan, Maggie, and Griffin Thaxter. One Great grandchild Tristan Thaxter. Four Nephews: Ryan and Adam Martinson of Calgary; Michael and Ken Dalzell of Vancouver Island. And a sweet little pup named Mia. Glenn was born Nov 22/1936 in Swift Current and grew up in the Leinan area. He was a farmer most of his life with odd jobs here and there. Always willing to help others. In 2006 a major stroke after surgery forced him to retire. For the past few years, Thursdays had become a day Glenn really looked forward too. Dropped off at the hospital in the morning, he’d sit in a wheel chair at a table in the cafeteria, with a muffin and a coffee. He’d visit with acquaintances, friends, family, and hospital staff, till home care nurses took him up for his whirlpool bath – ‘taking the dust off’ as he would say. Even in failing health he rarely complained. Said it wouldn’t help anyway. He graded his health – At best he’d say he was 30%….But on the positive side, he was at 100% of that 30%. In the past couple weeks he felt that his usual 30% was getting pretty tough to achieve. Many thanks to the home care staff who assisted him daily. You were all so good to him. To those who stopped to visit him either at home or the hospital – it meant more to him than you could ever imagine. To Kathy who gave him a beautiful place to call home – he could only do it with your help. He was a man of few words so he probably didn’t say how thankful he was for all you’ve done – but know that he was. In memory of Glenn Martinson, donations may be made towards the Ability Bowl for his son Carley. A private graveside internment at Memory Gardens will be held Thursday April 14/2016.
