Please share a memory of Hubert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
STUSRUD – Hubert (September 24, 1932 – May 8, 2016) on the afternoon of May 8th, Hubert passed away with his family by his side. His strength and love will always be with us. Hubert is survived by his wife Donna, Son Bjarne (Trudy), daughter Karen (Kevin), stepson Nevada Cranston (Doris) as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brothers Leonard (Kay), Stanley (Jan), and Ken, sister Eilleen Bevolden, sister-in-law Karen Stusrud and brothers-in-law Robert and Russel Schneidmiller. Hubert is predeceased by his parents Hans and Sigrid, first wife Marion, brothers Dennis and Gordon, sister Sonja Jones, brothers-in-law Clifford Bevolden and Charles Jones and sister-in-law Olive Stusrud. Hubert was born September 24, 1932 at Gull Lake, SK. He attended the Richview School north of Gull Lake until the age of 14. He married Marion Crowley in 1955. They were married until her passing in 1977. On July 8, 1978, he married Donna Schniedmiller and they made a life farming and raising cattle to the present day. Hubert left home at the age of 15 to join the workforce. He worked as a farm hand for Art Krause north of Swift Current until the age of 16. From the ages of 16-18, he spent winters in Northern Ontario cutting pulp wood and returning home in the summers to help his parent’s farm. When Hubert was 19, he decided to work at a sawmill in Southwest Alberta. He continued here for two years before moving on to the Johnson Brothers Sawmill in Fort McLeod. Hubert worked here until the age of 23. At this point in his life, his love of farming and cattle led him back home where he purchased his farm from Benny Gardner. Hubert farmed and ranched to the present. He bottle fed his calves the very morning he was hospitalized. Hubert’s other big job was bus driving. He started driving for the Gull Lake School Division in 1956 and retired from the bus in 2004. That is a remarkable 48 years of getting children to school and home safely. Hubert had a love of life that made it easy for him to enjoy many hobbies. If he wasn’t on a tractor or tending to his cattle, he could be found doing mechanical work, gardening or arrowhead hunting. He collected coins, artifacts and has a huge collection of antiques. He loved showing off his collections to visitors from near and far. Hubert will always be remembered for his purchases at auction sales. He attended numerous sales each season only to come home with a truck full of miscellaneous boxes, finding treasures as he went through each box. Of everything Hubert loved, his family was the most special to him. He beamed with pride when around his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved visiting family and friends. These visits will be greatly missed. He could make anyone feel special. Hubert was the most loving, generous and caring person. He will be sadly missed but always loved and never forgotten by anyone who had the honour to be part of his life. We love you! A memorial tea will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Elks Hall in Gull Lake, SK. Donations can be made to STARS, the Canadian Cancer Society or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
