Obituary of Martha Jane Rooney
Martha Jane Rooney, aged 93, passed away in her sleep in the early hours of October 21, 2024, at Cypress Regional Hospital. Martha was born on March 23, 1931, on the family farm near Broderick, Sask., to Mildred and Egbert Stubson. She is survived by her son Mike and his wife Bev, grandsons Jordan and Brendan, sister-in-law Muriel Rooney, and many nieces and nephews on both Rooney and Stubson sides. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ned, and siblings John and Elvin Stubson, and Grayce Magness. Martha was born a farm girl, and often said she wished she could still have a horse. After graduating from high school, she began her working life as a telephone operator for Sask Tel. She married Ned in 1959, and in October of 1960, they welcomed their son to the world. For the next several years the
family lived in locations across western Canada in support of Ned’s many business interests. Saskatchewan was always home for Martha and Ned, and they made the pilgrimage back in 1974 when they moved to Swift Current. Martha returned to work with Sask Tel, first as an operator, and then moving to the business office. She retired as a business office manager in 1991. Mom often said she was puzzled by retired people complaining that they didn’t have anything to do. Her advice was just find something you enjoy and keep busy doing it. Her retirement years were indeed busy, and what she enjoyed was simply helping people any way they needed. She was very proud to say that she was one of the first groups trained to serve with Victim Services in Swift Current and served in that role for several years. She volunteered in the Hospital Auxiliary gift shop, with the Canadian Cancer Society, and with Telephone Pioneers, as well as a driver for home care services. She was always available to drive friends for groceries or to appointments not only in town, but also on road trips to Medicine Hat, Regina, and Saskatoon. The last several years were a health struggle, but Martha was able to live in her home until her passing. The family warmly thanks those who helped make this possible – Deb Demars, Pearl Craft, Shaun McGonigal, and all the staff at Prairie Pioneer Manor for their support and kindness; Germaine Rempel for her help with housekeeping; and neighbors Marlene Dolter and Ellen Billington, whose kindness was appreciated beyond words. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Parkside Funeral Home. In Lieu of flowers, we would ask that you consider a donation to an organization of your choosing that helps seniors in your community.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Parkside Memorial Funeral Home. The interment will be at Mount Pleasant Burial Park, Swift Current, SK.
