Obituary of Wilf Funk

Please share a memory of Wilf to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

FUNK - Wilfred passed away peacefully October 4th, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. Wilf was born October 10, 1953 to Peter & Gertrude Funk in Herbert, Saskatchewan. In 1974 he married Bonnie Davidson. They became best friends and soul mates having 50 years together. Wilf & Bonnie were blessed with 2 children and 7 grandchildren. Wilf started his career as a welder at McIntyres Manufacturing and later went on to get his pressure ticket. In 1978 they moved to Lloydminster, following the boom, where he worked for Universal Industries building batteries in the oil field. After 4 years of oilfield life working non stop he commented this is not a family life so moved back to Swift Current.
Wilf then decided to change direction and went back to school to get his Building Maintenance certificate and got a job at Swift Current Housing. In 1992 Wilf started his journey of caretaking at St Patrick’s School. He stayed there until they closed the school in 2014 and then moved over to All Saints/ Ecole Centennial until his retirement in 2016. It was definitely his calling. He shared many memories of the students over the years. So many comical stories. Wilf was not only a caretaker; he was a counsellor, a teacher and a guide. He was there to help any child in any situation. Everyone knew Mr. Funk. Aside from the love of his career, Wilf enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing and golfing. He just really enjoyed the great outdoors in general. He was a homebody by heart but did venture out on vacations toVictoria, High Level, Fairmont Hot Springs and Mexico and Jamaica. He was fun loving, easy going and a practical joker. He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, brother & brother in law and a pretty cool uncle to his many nieces and nephews. A good friend as well to everyone who crossed his path. And truly a man of faith with strong beliefs.

Wilf leaves to cherish his memory his wife Bonnie, son Jeff, daughter Amanda (Jeffrey) Epp, grandchildren Kayden (Bailey), Riece & Tyler, Rylan, Hailey (Riley) & Nevaeh, his sister Delores (Roy) Fitzpatrick, brother in law Michael Chant, sister in law Cindy (Kim) Selanders, brother in law Darvin Davidson (Donna Shulson), and many nieces and nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents Peter & Gertrude Funk, his brothers Ben, Dietrich (Carol) & Edward Funk, his sisters Gertrude (Alvin) Saathoff & Sarah Chant, parents in law John & Alice Davidson, sisters in law Karen Davidson & Brenda (Dick) Stenhouse, brother in law Randy Davidson and by his very special grandson Baby Braden. Special mention to all staff and students of St. Patrick’s School, All Saints Catholic & Ecole Centennial schools who are honoured as honourary pallbearers. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Donations can be made to Southwest Homes in memory of Wilf. Arrangements are in care of Parkside Memorial Funeral Home – Ryan Cappelle & Hayden Cappelle.
