Obituary of Marion Bakken

Please share a memory of Marion to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

BAKKEN - Marion Evaline (nee Ager) was born March 14, 1926, to George and Evelyn Ager, in a private home in Assiniboia, operated by a Mrs. Munger. She was the third child in a family of seven – Frank, Irene, Marion, Clair, Bob, Lois, and Devona. She grew up on a farm, working hard while also having fun skating, playing cards and baseball in the evenings. She worked in a café in Scout Lake; then to Regina where she worked in a bullet factory, and a bank; a store and post office in Avonhurst; cooking for a road crew at Rockglen with her sister Lois. After a trip to BC to visit her sister Irene, she was hired again to cook at Bracken where she met her future husband, Mel Bakken. They were married October 27, 1948, and lived northeast of Bracken for nearly 40 years where they raised 8 children. Growing up there were many evenings full of music and laughter. In 1977, she went on a trip to Nashville and took part in a trail ride to the Montana border, both with her daughter Patti. She received her Reflexology certificate in 1982, an accomplishment she was very proud of! Marion and Mel sold the farm and moved to Swift Current in 1990. They enjoyed carpet bowling and playing Bingo. She did house cleaning, spent many hours babysitting for numerous families, and enjoyed baking – including making pies for the Swift Current Indians baseball team for 2 years. In 2007, she enjoyed a memorable trip to Las Vegas with her son Brad and granddaughter Jori to watch the PBR. She got to meet her favourite Justin McBride, and even had a blanket made with their picture on it! She had a very full life with births, weddings, and graduations – most recently, the wedding of her first great granddaughter Taiah. She was proud to have attended the graduations of every grandchild and great grandchild to date. She enjoyed going to the Casino, listening to music at care homes, and being the Egg Lady – a chance to visit with everyone who stopped by. Being with her family was most important, and she was grateful to have so many nearby. Marion is predeceased by her husband Mel (2001), baby Laura shortly after birth, her parents George and Evelyn, and siblings Frank, Clair, Bob, and Irene. She survived by daughter Amber Flom (Jerry Baker), daughter Laureen (husband Joe Kress), son Darryl (wife Cathy Shepherd), daughter Kim Taylor, son Stan (wife Karla), daughter Patti (husband Lionel Highsaw), son Brad (wife Angele), son Jerry. She also leaves to mourn 14 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and family members who were all very special to her.
